During the Honeywell Users Group (HUG) meeting held November 4-7 in Nice, France, two awards were given recognizing excellence of different sorts. First, Dursun Can Ozcan was named the winner of the annual Honeywell UniSim Design Challenge student competition for the Europe, Middle East, Africa (EMEA) region. Dursun, a student at the University of Edinburgh's School of Engineering, showcased his winning design to the 1,000 attendees gather for the HUG EMEA meeting.
Dursun Can Ozcan's research focused on reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in the cement industry. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, reductions of global CO2 emissions of at least 50 percent will be needed across the globe. Working under that assumption Dursun used the UniSim Design Suite to simulate emissions from a cement plant and the impact of a number of processes including calcium looping and amine-scrubbing.
"Meeting environmental regulations that often are different, or changing, in markets around the world is a major challenge for manufacturers. It is not enough to operate safely, efficiently and reliably, customers also need to focus on sustainability," said Vimal Kapur, vice president and general manager of Honeywell Process Solutions' Advanced Solutions business. "Dursun Can has done some very impressive work addressing this challenge, and enhancing the value of process simulation as an enabler to reduce CO2 emissions at forward-thinking facilities."
The competition, one of three held at Honeywell's regional customer conferences, seeks to recognize some of the most-talented engineering students around the world. It challenges the students to solve real-world problems facing industrial processing plants by using Honeywell's UniSim Design process simulation and design software, which is used by manufacturers throughout the globe. Winning students earn the chance to present their research projects to many of the world's top manufacturers, and potential employers, at HUG.
Spain's Iberfluid Scores Channel Partner Award
The second annual meeting of Honeywell Process Solutions' channel partners in the region was held in conjunction with this year's 25th annual HUG EMEA conference. In an awards ceremony recognizing key partner achievements, the top honor, the Field Products 2013 Channel Partner of the Year Award, was given to Iberfluid Instruments, S.A., headquartered in L'Hospitalet del Llobregat (Barcelona), Spain.
Iberfluid sells multiple Honeywell product lines, from SmartLine Pressure transmitters to Modular Systems and has grown their Honeywell business more than 40 percent from the previous year by focusing on one thing, delivering outstanding customer service.
For example, an Iberfluild customer wanted to make their facility safer and asked Iberfluid for a customized program to meet the challenge. Iberfluild's solution leveraged Honeywell Gas detection technology from Honeywell Analytics and HC900 Process and Safety System to monitor harmful gasses and keep the customer's employees safe while also maintaining a SIL2 classification. The team at Iberfluid services their customers from four strategically located offices that are near their customer base in Spain and Portugal. They also provide highly educated sales and service staff along with local Honeywell stock.
Additional awards were given to other regional channel partners. These winners include:
- Field Products Systems Integrator of the Year: MSJ Engineering, United Arab Emirates, for developing a working partnership with Honeywell Building Solutions to successfully target non-traditional Honeywell customers.
- East Europe Channel Partner of the Year: Oksan A.S., Turkey, for exceeding its original revenue target by 25 percent.
- West Europe Channel Partner of the Year: Iberfluid Instruments, S.A.
- Middle East Channel Partner of the Year: Purshottam Kanji Trading Company L.L.C., Oman, for 130 percent revenue growth over the prior year's target.
"We've built out our partner network in EMEA and are now seeing the benefits of a solid distribution channel," said Don Maness, vice president, Honeywell Process Solutions. "With an extended network of channel partners who work hand in hand with our sales force, we can now deliver high-quality Honeywell products, services, expertise, support, and training to customers that we were unable to reach in the past."
