Marshall High School Seniors in the Electronic Engineering Internship program at Thurgood Marshall High School, Sugarland, Texas, attended and participated in the Yokogawa Technology Fair and Users Conference hosted by Yokogawa on April 8, 2008. The Tech Fair took place April 7-10 at the Downtown Hilton Americas hotel and the George R. Brown Convention Center.
The event included free training seminars highlighting Yokogawa’s technology as a market leader in the field of industrial automation. The event provided an avenue for the students, who recently participated in the Lone Star Regional Robotics Competition, to network with industry professionals and discuss key engineering concepts relating to distributed control systems (DCS), SCADA, asset management applications, flow measurement, remote data management, safety instrumented systems (SIS) and safety integrity levels (SIL).
Marshall’s EE Academy Advisory Committee sponsored this trip on behalf of the students with the prime objective in mind of giving the students greater exposure, a better understanding, and a better appreciation of the exciting field of engineering that awaits them in industrial automation.
A highlight for the students was the opportunity to hear from key note speaker Gordon Bethune, former CEO and Chairman of Continental Airlines, author of From Worst to First, his book documenting the planning and foresight it took to turn what was then one of America’s underperforming major airlines to being one of the top airlines in North America.
Afterward his speech, the students briefly visited with Mr. Bethune and had an opportunity for a photo shoot. The students also had the opportunity to meet and have conversations with many Yokogawa representatives and vendors at the conference that specialize in all aspects of industrial automation.
During the afternoon session, the students had the opportunity to visit several exhibit stations hosted by Yokogawa vendors. At each station, the students had a chance to see interactive presentations of the technology on display and ask questions about it.
