Siemens tapped for multiple advanced I&C systems in U.S.
01/08/2009
Siemens Energy has been awarded orders for the installation of Siemens I&C systems at a coal-fired power plant in Carneys Point, N.J.; a combined cycle power plant in Redding, Calif.; and combined cycle power plants in Syracuse and Beaver Falls, N.Y. The web-based SPPA-T3000 distributed control system (DCS) is an intelligent and cost-effective I&C solution for these plants, as it was designed for use in all power plant types. The power plant and turbine control systems of these plants will be integrated into a single, platform that will help optimize the operations and maintenance sequences.
“The U.S. orders showcase the market leadership of the Siemens SPPA-T3000 control system, which has been sold more than 520 times worldwide since its market introduction in 2005,” said Karlheinz Springer, CEO of Siemens Energy’s Instrumentation, Controls & Electrical Business Unit.
The Carneys Point generating plant is a coal-fired cogeneration facility with an installed capacity of 184 MW. Siemens Energy will upgrade two Foster Wheeler boilers with the new DCS, providing the plant owner/operator, Chambers Cogeneration LP, with greater flexibility to align the operating mode of the units with demand, as well as enhanced reliability and reduced maintenance costs.
The Redding combined-cycle power plant in California has a capacity of 135 megawatts (MW) and is owned and operated by Redding Electric Utility (REU). Siemens will upgrade the DCS of the existing Siemens power train of Unit 5, consisting of two gas turbines and a heat recovery steam generator. Installation of the SPPA-T3000 DCS in the new Unit 6 is scheduled for 2009.
Siemens has also been awarded orders to upgrade the plant control systems of the Syracuse and Beaver Falls combined cycle power plants in New York State. The Syracuse Generating Facility is owned and operated by WPS Syracuse Generation, and the Beaver Falls Generating Facility is owned and operated by WPS Beaver Falls Generation. The Siemens scope of supply consists of the modernization of the DCS of the Siemens gas turbines in both facilities. The SPPA-T3000 was selected for these projects because it allows seamless integration in the existing IT landscape of both power suppliers, simplifies operation and maintenance of the two facilities and also enhances power plant reliability.
