Today, many industrial networks and application layers use standard Ethernet with Internet Protocol to connect to the enterprise network and the Internet. Benefits of doing this include increased visibility of plant floor activities, integration with back-office applications, and lower total cost of ownership. Yet, this affects the security and availability of the industrial network, the automation and control systems they interconnect.
