Software Monitors Thousands of Worldwide Assets Daily in Aviation, Oil & Gas, Power Generation and Mining Industries

GE Intelligent Platforms’ Industrial Performance & Reliability Center (IPRC), Lisle, Illinois, monitors thousands of worldwide assets daily in industries such as oil and gas, power generation, mining and aviation. GE reports the center catches more than 200 predictive equipment failures each month, which are issues agreed to by customers as early signs of failure modes, and which they decide to fix as a result of the advisory. In 2013, IPRC caught 2,184 early failures and missed seven, which was a 99.7% accuracy rate for catchable events as defined by its customer base.

Part of IPRC solution is GE’s Proficy SmartSignal software that detects variances for each device. This provides early warnings of impending problems, with diagnoses of major equipment and process failures, and prioritizations based on severity. The software also organizes maintenance projects and reduces maintenance costs because repairs can be done during scheduled downtimes.

Mike Hartsig, plant manager at Griffith Energy, reports GE's solution helps make his plant as reliable and efficient as possible. "What keeps me up at night are the things I don’t know about," says Hartsig. "Proficy gives us a heads up as to potential problems. We use it to let us know about anomalies before they become alarms and before they become a problem."
