This paper shows how combining safety and non-safety functions in a safety instrumented system (SIS) is acceptable, and indeed practiced, in many facilities worldwide, and suggests eight implementation and testing precautions to follow so that a safe and reliable application can be anticipated.

By Robert S. Adamski, Director Premier Consulting Services

Based on the current National and International Standards for the process industries, a safety instrumented system (SIS) may also be used for non-safety applications such as turbine control. Conversely, a device that normally executes critical control functions e.g. a turbine controller, may also include safety functions related to the equipment under control (EUC).
