This paper provides a current and unbiased assessment of All Things Industrial Wireless both past, current and near-term future.

By Hesh Kagan, Director, Industrial Wireless, Invensys Process Systems; and Peter Fuhr, Ph.D. Chief Technology Officer, Apprion

The arena of industrial wireless systems crosses numerous applications that are administered by different business units within the facility. The data communications needs of these applications vary in terms of required data transfer rate, quality of service, ease of installation etc. Factor in the need for ease of deployment and servicing and wireless systems enters into mix.

An examination of a system architecture shows that there are various ways in which these different flavors of industrial wireless may intersect. Paramount to the end users is the relatively simple notion that the systems must coexist nicely and perhaps, just perhaps, even allow for some flavor of multivendor interoperability – which leads to a definitive goal that lies at the core of the Wireless Industrial Networking Alliance (WINA).
