This paper discusses the scope and approach taken to integrate quality information from various analytical devices through a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) with a real-time process information system information connected to a distributed control system (DCS).

By Steve Churchill, Sr. System Specialist, and Mike Williams, Manager, The Dow Chemical Company

The ability to meet and verify achievement of customer specifications is a significant requirement for participation in the high value-added specialty plastics and chemicals businesses. This need is complicated when collecting process information from a semi-continuous manufacturing process. The current ability to monitor, collect and report conformance to customer specification is impeded by the lack of integrated product quality data with process information in a batch or campaign context.

A process information project was chartered to explore and demonstrate a software application which could provide both process and quality information in a batch context. The product being manufactured is a pharmaceutical excipient, which presents additional requirements for traceability and material genealogy.
