Pepperl+Fuchs updates RM Shell 5

July 17, 2018

Pepperl+Fuchs updated its RM Shell firmware for VisuNet Remote Monitor HMI systems. The new firmware, which is based on the latest generation of Microsoft Windows® 10 IoT Enterprise LTSB, supports easy integration of a remote network architecture. VisuNet RM Shell 5 now supports an Application Manager for installing third-party application software and offers additional security and Windows update features. The firmware comes preloaded on all Pepperl+Fuchs thin client-based products. For current users running Pepperl+Fuchs thin clients with RM Shell 4 or greater, an upgrade kit is available for migration to the new RM Shell 5 firmware. RM Shell 5 is embedded with security features, including a Microsoft® Universal Write Filter, built-in firewall, USB lockdown, and an optional restricted web browser. The firmware comes standard with Windows® Defender for virus protection, but also allows third-party antivirus software to be installed by customers. RM Shell 5 supports multiple password-protected user roles that limit critical system settings to authorized engineers or administrators, further increasing system security. VisuNet RM Shell 5 supports the latest protocol generations of Microsoft RDP 10, VNC, and NetC@P. With an auto-connect feature, backup connections, and connection-loss detection, RM Shell 5 can automatically connect to a host system after start-up or automatically reconnect to a host after detecting a signal loss.
