150421 Fluke 80211ac802.11ac is the first Wi-Fi standard to provide gigabit performance. Using the technology concepts pioneered in the popular 802.11n, this new standard increases the maximum potential data rate from 600Mbps to 1300Mbps, and eventually to 6.93Gbps.

While the most obvious result of these higher rates is faster data transfers for individual users, the biggest benefit for network managers may be the ability to handle a higher number of devices without unacceptable performance degradations. As the demand for high capacity and high quality real-time applications such as video and voice grows, upgrading APs to 802.11ac can help provide better access for many users. This is especially true given that most employees now access their company's network using multiple devices (work laptops, smart phones, and tablets).

Successfully implementing 802.11ac in an environment will require more than simply buying a few new APs, plugging them in, and purchasing a few client-end radios.
