Flame & Gas Detection System Effectiveness Studies by ISA TR84.00.07 and 3D Mapping

ISA’s Guidance Standard TR84.00.07 can be used to evaluate the effectiveness of a Fire & Gas system’s performance in risk reduction consistent with the underlying principles of ISA-61511-2018. In this presentation, we’ll discuss how the Guidance Standard can be deployed to provide the basis for developing a facility plot plan layout for gas and/or flame detection devices based on the identification of hazard scenarios and their associated risk levels. The Qualitative, Semi-Quantitative, and Fully Quantitative methods are described, and a Case Study for the Semi-Quantitative method will be included as the method most often chosen end users. The case study walks through each step of the process revealing the required documentation, the in-depth results of the hazard assessments for each targeted gas of interest and flame source, and the development of the initial plot plan in preparation for the optimization of the layout by 3D Mapping tools. The presentation continues with the use of the 3D Mapping software to fully optimize the detector layouts to meet the target performance goals set by the semi-quantitative methodology in the ISA TR84.00.07 Guidance Standard. We conclude by summarizing the value of performing these risk-based Fire & Gas Effectiveness Studies for the purpose of providing the most effective & economical system where the design has been engineered to match the gas and flame hazards at that facility.
