Paul Veeneman and I will be speaking at HouSecCon Sept. 24 on “OT Security: When the Cure is Worse than the Disease”.
Technologies meant to improve cybersecurity could inadvertently cause significant operational impacts when applied inappropriately or if files are corrupted as demonstrated by the recent CrowdStrike problem and the McAfee corrupted update incident. The same type of incidents have also affected operational technology (OT) networks and control system devices – the cure is worse than the disease.

Our session will discuss the impacts when IT/OT networking technologies and testing are used on control systems and OT networks in an inappropriate manner resulting in facility or equipment shutdowns, damage to control system devices and near misses including a major U.S. regional outage and a catastrophic power plant failure. These incidents could have been prevented with adequate control system cybersecurity training and technologies. This session will address the need to ensure that unintentional incidents are minimized.
