New products: For safety's sake

July 22, 2015
Traditional safety systems have been joined by sophisticated, safety-instrumented, integrated-networking solutions, but their common mission remains the same.
Smart, controllable fuse for medium voltage

Medium-Voltage Controllable Fuse (MVCF) provides arc-flash protection on the low-voltage side of a medium- voltage transformer by using a plug-in retrofit to existing MV fuses at low cost and minimal installation downtime and maintenance. MVCF is reported to be the first fuse to provide normal short-circuit and overload protection, while having the capability to open on command.

Standalone, expandable, connectable

NX Series safety controllers have added a standalone version that uses safety over EtherNet/IP, which allows it to be adapted to a wide range of safety applications. Its expandable design makes it scalable for systems with just a few I/O up to those with 256 I/O points. Programmed with Sysmac Studio software, NX Safety Control Unit supports any type of safety actuator.

SIS bridges to local networks

DeltaV SIS, Version 13, uses non-interfering Local Safety Network Bridge (LSNB) to provide safety-rated communication for multiple local safety networks over a redundant Ethernet safety network. Virtual simulation of DeltaV SIS with electronic marshalling can simulate an entire DeltaV SIS system, including Charms Smart Logic Solver (CSLS), SZ controllers and LSNB to verify safety logic.

High-Integrity burner management library

Burner Management System (BMS) library for ABB’s High Integrity (HI) safety system is suitable for different fuel types and contains TÜV-certified, SIL 3-capable function blocks for control over burner startup and operation, including ignition sequence, valve leak testing and air/fuel mixture. When integrated with ABB’s 800xA system, BMS library has 800xA faceplates, display and alarm handling.

Simpler, shorter SIS deployment

OptiSISsolution is a pre-engineered SIS that eases deployment and reduces lead times for process applications of 50 or 100 I/O points. OptiSISsolution accommodates digital and analog I/O and has simplex I/O and fault-tolerant (dual) I/O versions. It also meets requirements up to SIL 3,  is compliant with IEC 61511/ISA 84.00.01 and uses ready-to-install, TÜV-certified hardware and validated software.

Signal Conditioners for safety

MACX Analog Ex signal conditioners are 12.5 mm wide, include one or two channels with SIL reliability data, and link control and field devices in EX and non-EX locations. MACX  can serve as a safe power limitation in IS circuits in potentially explosive areas, up to Class I, Div. 1 and Zone 0. Due to SIL calculations, according to EN 61508-1, they can be designed into safety-related applications.

Safe digital communications

To help process applications migrate to digital networking, Hipro-S V2 safety protocol enables Ethernet-based, safety-related communication (SIL 3) with UDP packets. It safely communicates between Hima’s three safety controller families—HIMatrix, HIMax and HIQuad. HIPRO-S V2 doesn’t need a separate certificate because it’s a component of HIQuad, HIMax and HIMatrix controllers.

SIS with onscreen monitoring

ProSafe-RS R3.02.20 is an enhanced version of ProSafe-RS SIS with improved connectivity to ProSafe-SLS SIS, enabling status of both systems to be monitored onscreen by Centum VP control system. Its support of Distributed Network Protocol 3 (DNP3) lets users easily replace and expand systems in the field, while continuing to use existing SCADA systems.

Emergency shutdown relays

SafeSeries SIL relays are 22 mm wide with cULus approvals, single and dual channels, pluggable field connectors, -25 ˚C to 50 ˚C ambient temperature range and DIN-rail mounting for switching safety-related circuits up to SIL 3 level per IEC61508. They accept 24-Vdc safety inputs and offer a monitoring circuit option with input voltages from 24 to 230 Vac/dc.

SIL-2 safety transmitter

One Series safety transmitter reportedly is the first SIL 2-certified transmitter designed solely for safety applications, so it doesn’t have to be adapted for safety as traditional process transmitters do. One Series response time is less than 100 milliseconds; it’s available in versions that monitor temperature and pressure; and it provides 4-20 mA, NAMUR-standard output with "I Am Working" diagnostics.

Better interlocking, position monitoring

SI Series safety limit switches monitor the position of guards, gates, covers and other moveable fixtures. They’re available in three models, SI-LM40, SI-LS31 and SI-LS83, offering various actuating systems, contact arrangements, housing and mounting configurations. SI Series’ limit-switch style complies with Type 1 per ISO 14119, with actuating elements integrated with the enclosure.
