Assuring ATEX Compliance

ATEX directive 94/9/EC is the most current European Community (EC) Harmonized Safety Compliance Directive and Standard. ATEX stands for “Atmosphere Explosive” (in French) and it is the law in the EU. Only EU certification agencies are allowed to certify products in accordance with the ATEX directive.  What does this mean to you, a process control plant automation professional or a firm servicing process plant clients?

Only EU certification agencies are allowed to certify products in accordance with the ATEX directive.  What does this mean to you, a process control plant automation professional or a firm servicing process plant clients? It means that you must be aware of where ATEX certified products must be used in your plants worldwide. You must also be sure that any products that you purchase to apply in hazardous areas are properly labeled.Although ATEX is a European directive, many countries outside of the U.S. adhere to the standard. In the U.S., standards for products used in explosive areas are defined by the National Electrical Code (NEC).
