Emerson Process Control, Fisher Controls
Process control and measurement video training includes a 4-unit module of 25- to 40-minute video tapes on level measurement. Student guides include a pre-test and post-test to measure learning gain. When an original post-test is submitted for scoring, a certificate of CEUs is returned to the student or administrator. Using this system, it is possible to establish a reasonably formal and documented training system to impart fundamental knowledge.

Free 213-page, hardbound application-oriented handbook, The Theory and Practice of Level Measurement, describes the various electronic and electromechanical level-measurement systems currently available. The handbook opens with an explanation of the terminology, symbols and principles of level measurement. This is followed by a look at capacitive and conductive level detection and various probes used for measurement.

Condensed Handbook of Measurement and Control, 3rd Edition, by N.E. Battikha provides access to ISA symbology, instrument and control valve selection criteria and conversion guidelines, with new sections on maintenance, calibration, decision-making skills and consulting. A large portion of the handbook is devoted to level measurement and control. A CD-ROM is also included. Available from ISA publications.

This paper, “A Practical Overview of Level Continuous Measurement Technologies,” is found at the comprehensive information site for Instrumentation, Control, Fire & Gas Engineers in Australia, from the Foundation Fieldbus End User Council of Australia. It  discusses the strengths and weaknesses of RF admittance, displacers/floats, capacitance, ultrasonic, radar, nuclear, differential pressure,and bubbler level measurement technologies.

This is a reference site for all things sensor. Products, tutorials, references, etc. This site contains a discussion of radar level measurement basics. Traditional sensors such as displacers and differential pressure transmitters are making way for new technology and in particular two-wire radar level transmitters. The site looks at some of the advances in different level technologies and highlights why pulse radar is rapidly becoming the preferred choice for process level measurement. Among the types of level measurement discussed are capacitive admittance, hydrostatic, ultrasonic, and nucleonic or radiometric level transmitters, and guided microwave, radar, wave guide radar and other kinds of non-contact pulse radar and ultimate chemical resistance measurement.
