October 25th at the 2017 ICS Cyber Security Conference in Atlanta, Neil Holloran, Ken Loparo from Case Western, and myself will host a panel session on using cyber means to manipulate physics. I believe too much focus has been on traditional cyber threats and associated malware. The ability to use cyber to cause a physical system to operate in an unstable mode can result in catastrophic damage that cannot be mitigated by traditional cyber means. The Aurora vulnerability is one example of using cyber means to initiate physics issues to damage hardware and other actual examples will also be discussed. These types of attacks often cannot be detected as being cyber-related. The panel will also provide a parallel to military operations.
