More from Urso Magnifico! Tech Talk from HUG

Jason Urso went on in breakneck fashion. "What are the problems we solve?" he asked. "Operator effectiveness is a big problem that can be helped with converting to ASM-style graphics, and alarm management techniques, as well as automating procedures. We've also incorporated loop management, with a new product called 'opportune' into the Experion R300 system, as well as the capability of providing turnkey loop management services to personnel challenged customers." Jason Urso went on in breakneck fashion. "What are the problems we solve?" he asked. "Operator effectiveness is a big problem that can be helped with converting to ASM-style graphics, and alarm management techniques, as well as automating procedures. We've also incorporated loop management, with a new product called 'opportune' into the Experion R300 system, as well as the capability of providing turnkey loop management services to personnel challenged customers." Profit Suite R300, he noted, is aimed at reducing lifecycle costs. "We have to work at at sustaining APC gains, which means we have to get operators to learn to trust the APC, and not turn it off. We're providing more and better suites of algorithms, and we can also do it reliably and cost-effectively whether you're using an Experion system or a non-Honeywell DCS." Urso also talked about integration of Experion and Profit Suite and other Honeywell software offerings with Unisym. He also noted that the batch automation program provides faster batch execution by residing directly inside the real time controller. TotalPlant Batch is receiving extended support, especially in the bio-pharma industries. Urso made a big deal about Honeywell's capabilities in the paper industry, from the field sensor end, all the way to the business systems end. Remember the control-->MES-->ERP push every automation company is making? Honeywell is no exception. Urso described the three MES solutions Honeywell provides: BusinessFlex for multiple industries, POMSnet, designed specifically for biopharma, with major .NET functionality, as an end-to-end solution; and Optivision, designed specifically for the paper industry. All of these solutions have support for standards such as ISA95, OPC HDA, OAGIS, and others. Honeywell provides plant wide safety and security solutions, Urso said, including: --process design --secure process control, including contracting --asset management --abnormal situation management --operating environment --boundary management --safety shutdown, Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) --physical protection --emergency response Urso made an impassioned plea for users to stay away from combined-use Safety Instrumented Systems, as he noted, "Common products equals common mode failure." Plant security from Honeywell is designed into Experion to include intrusion detection, access control, radar detection, and video solutions, because, "we share a common DNA with Honeywell Security and Building Automation Systems." "You will not," Urso finished, "hear that our only migration path is 'rip and replace.'"
