Heidelberg Materials opens $600 million cement plant in Indiana

June 26, 2023

Heidelberg Materials opened its new, $600 million cement plant on June 13 in Mitchell, Ind. The company reports its new facility is the largest capital investment in its 150-year history, and is the most technologically advanced and sustainable plant it’s ever built.

The Mitchell plant can produce more than 2.4 million tons of cement per year, more than tripling its previous plant’s production. It’s reported to be the second-largest single cement plant in North America. At the same time, it will also reduce CO2 emissions and energy consumption.

This opening follows the 2021 passage of the U.S. Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. Consequently, along with its increased capacity and commitment to efficient delivery, Heidelberg is improving its distribution process. The company will deploy an additional 1,000 rail cars to serve the newly renovated rail yard near the site. The new distribution terminal accommodates 32,000 tons of additional cement storage.
