Supplyframe starts carbon footprint intelligence program for electronics

Offers details on 300 million parts to enable sustainable decisions and compliance
Supplyframe launched July 17 its Electronics Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) program that allows manufacturers to access carbon footprint data for more than 300 million electronic parts. It’s intended to let companies measure and report the sustainability of new product designs and sourcing decisions, and enable compliance reporting. Previously, companies trying to calculate a roll-up value would have had to dedicate weeks or months to get this data at the part or component level of a complex bill of materials (BoM).

“Until now, engineers designing new products and procurement teams tasked with obtaining components for those products had no way to evaluate the CO2 emissions of a new design or purchasing decision,” says Steve Flagg, CEO and founder at Supplyframe. “PCF gives them specific product carbon footprint details to meet regulatory reporting requirements and ultimately identify better alternatives that balance corporate efficiency, cost optimization and sustainability goals.”

PCF is being introduced as new European Union regulations and evolving U.S. rules are requiring electronics manufacturers to quantify and report supply chain-related emissions. So far, these manufacturers have focused on reducing Scope 1 and 2 emissions to comply with regulations and corporate sustainability goals. However, an estimated 40% of the CO2 emissions associated with electronics products are Scope 3 emissions from production processes, material consumption and transportation. Consequently, suppliers had little or no data about CO2 emissions from the electronics they bought, which created a troublesome blind spot for manufacturers seeking to measure carbon footprints for electronics in their portfolios.

From material selection to end-of-life, PCF measures total carbon impact, expressed in kilograms of CO2 equivalent, which is integrated into SupplyFrame’s DSI Platform that already delivers part intelligence and supply market insights. PCF also leverages the sustainability partner ecosystem of Supplyframe’s parent company, Siemens, and will expand to be part of a broader set of metrics and analytics capabilities. The new CO2e capability is available via an add-on subscription to Supplyframe’s DSI platform.
