OPC Foundation launches academics program for OPC UA training

Aug. 3, 2021

The OPC Foundation launched June 8 its OPC UAcademics outreach program. It will provide post-secondary learning institutions with official, up-to-date OPC UA course content that's ready-made for easy inclusion in curriculums at no cost under a Creative Commons CC BY-NC 4.0 license. (Interested educators can also email the foundation [email protected] for more information.)

With the increasing global adoption of the OPC UA standard in processes and the proliferation of OPC UA-based products in all industries, OPC UA knowledge is fast becoming an essential competency for future generations of IT and OT automation professionals. To help academic institutions meet this need, the OPC Foundation created and is donating OPC UA training content suitable for universities, colleges and technical institutes to use in their curriculums.

The first edition of OPC UAcademics' content covers a comprehensive range of OPC UA topics including:

  • Introduction to OPC UA

  • The history of OPC and OPC UA

  • The specification, including OPC UA communications, security, address space model, services, information model, OPC FLC initiative, service mappings, profiles, aggregation and discovery, and publish/subscribe

  • Companion specifications

  • Implementation of OPC UA

  • Tools and frameworks

  • Use cases

  • Architectures

  • Introduction to practical exercises

“Market demand for people with OPC UA know-how is growing, given the critical role that OPC UA plays in many industries," says Stefan Hoppe, president and executive director of the OPC Foundation. "With the launch of our OPC UAcademics program, the foundation is extending its help to universities, so they can easily address this need by providing accurate and up-to-date OPC UA course content, which they can freely adapt and translate for use in their courses. The foundation has a longstanding tradition of working closely with academic institutions worldwide. As such, we're excited to launch this OPC UAcademics program as a logical next step in that relationship to address a common market need.”
