Batch Software Shootout-- right this way!

Peter Lee posted to The Automation List at Control.com: "I have to compare a Siemens S7 and a DeltaV automation system. The application will be with Batch S88. What are the advantages of each system? Comparison of application software engineering? Comparison of initial against lifecycle cost?" I am looking forward to seeing the replies, which, in nearly a whole day since he posted his question, are few...like none. Peter is not alone. There are lots of people who have to make these comparisons, and the information to make well investigated decisions simply is not available. Spitzer and Boyes LLC has been trying to get a "Consumer Guide to DCS Systems" written for several years, but the authors keep backing out... First, I would advise Peter to widen his search. While you can do batch processing with either system he is investigating, you can also do it with ABB's System 800XA, and Rockwell Automation's Integrated Architecture, and with Iconics or Citect software running on the hardware of your choice, say Phoenix Contact or MTL-MOST controllers. Here's a challenge to all you first and second tier automation system vendors...go to Control.com and help Peter answer his question. Walt
