Illinois Manufacturing Excellence Center launches state-funded internship program
The Illinois Manufacturing Excellence Center (IMEC) launched Mar. 9 its NextGen Makers internship program. It’s a structured, employer-driven initiative designed to help small and mid-sized Illinois manufacturers develop skilled talent through hands-on internships.
The program is open to Illinois manufacturers with 250 or fewer employees that are primarily engaged in NAICS codes 31-33. Participating companies may be eligible to receive up to $8,000 to support interns’ wages, with a maximum of two interns per company. Developed with support from the Illinois Dept. of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO), the program provides manufacturers with a clear framework to create, implement and manage structured internship experiences at their facilities.
The application process is designed to be simple and self-directed. Manufacturers can apply online, electronically sign the program agreement, and be contacted by IMEC to schedule a kickoff meeting.
“This program is about helping manufacturers move from reactive hiring to proactive workforce development, not only addressing immediate workforce gaps, but actively shaping the future of manufacturing in Illinois,” says David Boulay, Ph.D., president of IMEC. “NextGen Makers gives Illinois manufacturers a structured, practical way to train and evaluate future employees inside their own operations — strengthening individual companies and the state’s broader manufacturing ecosystem.
Illinois manufacturers continue to face workforce shortages, aging talent pools, and increasing competition for skilled labor. NextGen Makers helps companies take control of their talent pipeline by developing future employees aligned to their specific operational needs.
Through the program, manufacturers receive:
- Structured internship framework and implementation templates,
- Guidance on planning, onboarding and mentorship
- Tools for structured check-ins and performance reviews
- Support throughout the internship lifecycle
“NextGen Makers is a testament to our shared commitment with IMEC to invest in the next generation of hardworking Illinoisians,” adds Kristin Richards, director of Illinois DCEO. “This program will support the state's effort to develop a pipeline of talent for Illinois' manufacturing workforce, ensuring we remain competitive on a global scale.”
