Codesys and Cisco have collaborated has built and tested a software-defined network architecture that supports virtualizing industrial automation and control systems (IACS) and controllers. This strategy lets users consolidate plant-floor PLCs, industrial PCs, HMIs, network gateways and other physical-compute resources onto virtual machines (VM), which can run on a hyperconverged compute and storage infrastructure (HCI).

To simulate and test its wood-processing solutions despite increasing demand and throughput, Comact recently implemented Rockwell Automation’s FactoryTalk Logix Echo software to better emulate the behavior of its controllers, access greater processing power, and test them in a virtual environment. The company added three sets of 16 emulated processors for a total of 48 usable systems, which reportedly cost about one-tenth as much as physical processors and associated hardware.
