Synchronous reluctance motors add three smaller frame sizes

The motor can deliver 40% energy savings and faster payback times
Jan. 21, 2026

IE5 synchronous reluctance motor (SynRM) portfolio has added three smaller frame sizes (90, 100, 112) that cover 0.75 kW to 450 kW. This gives users the broadest range of magnet- and rare earth-free motors to boost efficiency, reliability and sustainability. With extended power and speed options up to 3,600 RPM, these motors are ideal for pumps, fans, and compressors, and pair with ABB variable speed drives (VSD).

IE5 motors are reported to cut energy losses up to 40% compared to IE3 motors, as well as save revenue and speed up payback times.

IE5 is part of ABB’s EcoSolutions portfolio that lets users make more sustainable choices by increasing transparency about each product’s circularity and environmental impact. This supports more informed, responsible decision-making. Products in this portfolio are backed by externally verified, third-party Environmental Product Declarations (ISO 14025 Type III).

Adding smaller frame sizes also reinforces ABB’s commitment to IE6 “Hyper-Efficiency,” which was already achieved by select SynRM models above 90 kW. These motors deliver up to 20% lower losses than IE5, setting a benchmark in energy efficiency.
