Online resources: Optimize calibration

Oct. 20, 2015
Taking on calibration online resources. Here's what can help you optimize your calibration processes

DIGITAL DEVICES NEED CALIBRATION

Many people are under the mistaken impression that they don't have to calibrate their digital transmitter, in part because they don't have the facilities to do so with the accuracy possible at the factory. However, not doing at least a reference check on a regular basis, including at commissioning, is a bad idea. Ian Verhappen explains why, with today's smart instruments, doing such a check is easier than it ever was before.

TO A T OR NOT TOO T?

Some processes do not require temperature measurement accuracy, and others do. However, you may be unsure whether accuracy is important for your particular application, or whether improving accuracy will make enough of a difference in your process results to justify the cost and effort. This paper identifies problems that result from inaccurate measurements, and outlines ways to solve them that are both effective and economical. Check it out here.

A TECHNICIAN'S TOOLBOX

It's not surprising that a maker of many technicians' favorite tools offers good advice on how to perform calibrations. Ranging from HART smart transmitters and gas custody transfer flow computer calibrations to simulating thermocouples and RTDs for calibration and testing, these clear, well-illustrated online resources apply no matter what name is on your instruments. Find pressure here and temperature here.

CALIBRATING PRESSURE INSTRUMENTS

Hunter Vegas from Wunderlich Malec, and Ned Espy and Roy Tomalino from Beamex, presented a two-part ISA webinar on the basics, crucial issues and best practices for successful pressure calibration. For your convenience, Control's executive editor, Jim Montague, provided a detailed written summary of the two presentations, complete with links to the webinars. Read the summary and, if you have the time and inclination, access the original 90-minute presentations.

BEST PRACTICES FOR FLOW CALIBRATION

Failure to calibrate flowmeters can negatively impact performance, while calibrating too frequently can result in excessive costs without providing any benefits. But in many plants, flowmeters are calibrated annually or more frequently simply because that's the way it was done in the past. This paper describes how new instruments and technologies, combined with careful planning and study, can allow plants to calibrate flowmeters at an optimum frequency, resulting in improved operations and cost savings. Access it easily here.

HOW OFTEN MUST YOU CALIBRATE?

Most plants have a maintenance plan or schedule in place to ensure that all instruments used across the site are calibrated at the appropriate times. However, with increasing demands and cost issues, the time and resources required to carry out these calibration checks are often scarce. This video shows how to prioritize calibration, so critical instruments receive regular checks, while the rest get what they need as often as they need it. View the video.

HOW TO CALIBRATE A PH SENSOR

Do you know how to prepare a pH sensor for calibration? The temperature affect on calibration and what to do about it? What to do next if the calibration is unsuccessful (you might be able to save the day)? How about the visible signs that a pH sensor must be replaced? Find the answers to those and other questions about pH sensor calibration in the three-minute video, "pH Sensors: Two Point Calibration."
