Bentley Systems sells Thread Connectivity business to Worldsensing

April 20, 2023

Bentley Systems Inc. announced Mar. 22 that Worldsensing is acquiring Bentley’s sensemetrics’ Thread connectivity device business to expand its hardware portfolio, while Bentley will become the lead investor in Worldsensing’s Series D fundraising effort.

Worldsensing’s acquisition of Thread connectivity will offer new options in adaptive sensor integration or active sensor management. Thread offers broadband sensor connectivity to connect sensors and stream data to the cloud for analysis. Thread is a fully autonomous sensor connectivity device with optional integrated 4G/LTE cellular modem, wireless mesh networking, and battery pack in a weather resistant enclosure. Each broadband device also serves as a gateway for wireless smart sensors.

Joining Worldsensing products is expected to give Thread new growth opportunities. Worldsensing will also become a preferred sensor connectivity partner for Bentley, and Bentley will become a preferred IoT software partner to Worldsensing. This will give their mutual users fully integrated, end-to-end sensor management.

“We’re thrilled to enter into this agreement with Bentley Systems,” says Ignasi Vilajosana, CEO of Worldsensing. “The acquisition of sensemetrics’ Thread connectivity device business will expand our portfolio, and allow us to provide more options to our customers. We’re pleased to become a preferred sensor connectivity partner for Bentley’s iTwin IoT digital twin cloud services, confirming our position as the reference connectivity platform for mining, construction, rail and infrastructure monitoring.”

Justin Schmidt, VP of corporate development at Bentley, adds that, “We’re excited to partner with Worldsensing, and believe this strategic agreement will bring significant benefits to our respective user bases. We’re confident that combining Worldsensing’s expertise in IoT solutions and our leadership in infrastructure, digital-twin software will create a powerful offering.”
