Statkraft picks ABB to modernize three Norwegian hydropower plants

Modernization project includes installing DCS, electrical system and excitation system

ABB reported Aug. 18 that it’s been selected by Statkraft AS to upgrade the Vikfalli hydropower complex in Vik municipality, 170 kilometers northeast of Bergen on Norway's west coast. Its three plants produce 830 GWh per year, which is enough electricity for approximately 53,000 Norwegian homes.

The contract covers complete modernization of the plants’ controls, protection, excitation and electrical infrastructures, extending the life of assets essential to Norway’s reliable, low-carbon electricity, including hydropower that was responsible for almost 90% of its total electricity generation in June 2026.

Vikfalli’s three power stations include Målset (24 MW), Refsdal (92 MW) and Hove (68 MW), which operate five total generating units. ABB’s project scope includes installing its Ability System 800xA distributed control system (DCS) and monitoring platform, which will be integrated with the stations’ existing third-party turbine systems to create a unified operational environment across the complex. It will also deploy ABB’s Unitrol 8000 excitation systems for all five generating units, as well as cybersecurity, low- and medium-voltage electrical systems, vibration monitoring and protection, digital solutions, cable supply and installation. Construction at Målset is scheduled to start in 2028, with Refsdal and Hove to follow in 2029.

“Upgrading Vikfalli is an important step in strengthening Norway’s renewable energy infrastructure,” says Inge Hass, power plant manager at Statkraft’s Sogn group. “We worked closely with ABB from the earliest stage to ensure the solution was optimized.”

Per Erik Holsten, president of ABB’s Energy Industries division, adds, “Hydropower is an important part of an expanding energy system, helping to grow renewable capacity and deliver stable, baseload power to the grid. The priority now is ensuring that existing assets such as Vikfalli are equipped to fulfill that role for future needs with modern control and digital solutions that enable them to run more safely, cleaner and leaner, and be ready for future grid requirements.”
