Control's monthly resource guide focuses on flow measurement resources.

All-types video series

This classic series of four- and five-minute videos from Endress+Hauser starts with “The electromagnetic flow measuring principle,” which details how they’re governed by Faraday’s law of induction. This video's webpage has links to others covering ultrasonics, thermal mass, Coriolis and related technologies.

Liquids, gases and pipelines

Available online or as a PDF document, this 168-page "Flow control manual" by Valmet covers pipeline flow, control valve installation, liquid flow, gas and steam flow, multiphase flow and simulating control valve behavior, as well as appendices on sizing, steam and constants.
Neles Corp.

Introduction to vortex

This five-minute video, “Introduction to vortex flowmeter technology” covers their operating theory and how they accurately measure liquids, gasses and steam using a principle known as the von Kármán effect.

Ultrasonic principles

This five-minute video, “Measuring principles of ultrasonic flowmeters” from Krohne, covers the essential concepts like transit time and signal calculations.

Introduction to physics

The 290-page document, "Industrial flow measurement basics and practice" from ABB, provide an overview of the basic measuring principles and their limitations. Its chapters include an introduction to the physics of flow rate and total flow measurements, and a device selection guide.

Volumetric, mass flow, etc.

This 12-minute video, “Types of flowmeters and their industrial applications” details the workings of volumetric flowmeters, such as differential, electromagnetic, ultrasonic, turbine, vortex and positive displacement, and mass flowmeters, such as Cariolis and thermal mass.

How-to and turbines

These two videos, six-minute “How flowmeters work” and eight-minute “Turbine flowmeter explained” by RealPars cover all the primary types and concepts, as well as magnetic pickup sensing, volumetric flowrate, K-factor, field control loop, installation and downsides.

Gas flow calibration

The "Flow Calibration" website produced by Fluke includes links to gas flow standards (GFS), gas flow accessories, the GFS primary gravimetric flow standard, and reference documents including "Four steps to more effective gas flow calibration" and "Mass flow vs. volume flow in gas flow calibration."

Online fundamentals course

This online course with transcript, “Process control fundamentals: flow measurement” from Emerson, covers fluid properties, flow rates, factors impacting flow, flow profiles, Reynolds number, specifications for devices, and several types of flowmeters such as differential pressure, mass, velocity and positive displacement.

Three-part tutorial

This short, online guide, "Flow meter tutorial," at covers covers volumetric and mass flow rate measurement, volumetric units, and inferred mass flow measurement.
Omega Engineering

Measurement basics video

This seven-minute video, “Process control basics: flow measurement” in the Control Education Video Series covers all the essential concepts about this most-commonly measured variable, such as the six physical properties used to measure flow and the three primary considerations for deciding which technology to use.
