Vertical, hollow-shaft motors meet needs of Mexico’s water industry
ABB reported Apr. 7 that it’s expanded availability of its Vertical Hollow Shaft (VHS) motors to meet Mexico’s growing water industry needs by achieving its Normas Oficiales Mexicanas (NOM) and Asociación de Normalización y Certificación (ANCE) certifications.
Designed for vertical pumping applications, VHS motors are engineered for critical industries, including agriculture, mining, municipal water, wastewater treatment and industrial processing. NOM and ANCE certifications show that VHS motors comply with Mexico's regulatory requirements for safety and energy efficiency, enabling users, equipment manufacturers and channel partners to confidently specify and deploy ABB solutions nationwide.
“ABB's practical, reliable VHS motors aren't just engineered for performance. They're designed to help Mexico tackle its water crisis,” says Sam Harris, VP of fluid dynamics and heavy industrial solutions at ABB. “With reduced energy consumption, extended service life and simplified maintenance, ABB’s motors enable customers to operate more sustainable, cost-effective pumping systems that support Mexico's long-term water security."
ABB VHS motors are purpose-built for vertical pumping systems, and provide a combination of durability, serviceability and application-specific design advantages, such as:
- Simplified maintenance with a top-mounted coupling design that allows easier access to pump components, reducing downtime and service complexity.
- Operator-preferred features including an integrated sight glass that enables quick visual inspection of thrust-bearing lubrication.
- High-thrust capability that’s engineered to handle demanding vertical loads in deep wells and high-capacity pumping systems.
- Rugged construction that’s available in multiple enclosure types, including weather-protected and totally enclosed designs for harsh environments.
- Drop-in design that’s built to standard NEMA dimensions for seamless replacement and retrofit.
Other VHS features include NEMA Premium (IE3) efficiency, extra high-thrust capacity (175% extra thrust on 440 frames and above), inverter-duty rating for variable speed drive compatibility, and a heavy-duty cast iron frame. Motors are available from 15-500 horsepower across multiple voltage and frame options.
