Leaping off clipboards, paper chart recorders and other manual sources a few decades ago, most process automation and control data came to users through their HMI/SCADA screens and software for at least 25 years. It's just part of the scenery on the long, winding, hardware-turning-into-software highway.

To simulate and test its wood-processing solutions despite increasing demand and throughput, Comact recently implemented Rockwell Automation’s FactoryTalk Logix Echo software to better emulate the behavior of its controllers, access greater processing power, and test them in a virtual environment. The company added three sets of 16 emulated processors for a total of 48 usable systems, which reportedly cost about one-tenth as much as physical processors and associated hardware.
